National photo booth rental companies are eager to tell you why they are a good choice, but they seem to side-step what you should watch out for…or what I refer to as… “REALITY.” Let’s do a four question “reality check” to make the comparison between using a national vs. local photo booth provider.

For example:
• The printer stops working. Not because it’s out of photo paper or ink is out. It simply stops working.
• The camera won’t take a photo. Not because the attendant forgot to turn it on. It is broke as dropping your cell phone out of a moving car…broke!
• The touch screen has a problem. It goes blank or nothing happens when you touch the button that says, “Take Picture Now.”
• The computer or CPU just quits working in the middle of your reception. In this case, everything else is dependent on the CPU, so you’re pretty much…done!

Your local provider has…a back-up plan that addresses these issues and many more. A national company has…hope nothing goes wrong. Or, my favorite…we guarantee 85% up time. In other words, we’ll give you a refund because we can’t fix or replace the equipment. Now, ask yourself, “How exactly does that help me during my reception?”

If you use a national rental company, they may have one or two people in a particular city that represents them. If they get sick, well, you’re…done!

Frankly, there is no qualified back-up person. That is unless you count their college roommate who doesn’t know the first thing about working your wedding reception. But hey, at least someone showed up to attend the booth, right?

On the other hand, most local photo booth companies have either additional trained staff or back-up subcontractors who are trained and ready to step in at a moment’s notice.

National photo booth companies have expenses up and above those of your local photo booth company. Those expenses include items such as local Google ad words advertising (that’s how you find them), shipping their portable phone booths, long distance training, training hundreds and hundreds of subcontractors each year who come and go like a revolving door, advertising for reps in localities throughout the USA, giving refunds because of equipment breakdowns, failures, or attendants who don’t show up to your wedding reception. I could list 20 more items, but I think you get the photo─I mean picture.

Local photo booth companies typically offer a lower price because they don’t need to make up for all the expenses I just discussed. Also, most local owners can manage their equipment and employees much better than trying to manage the business with a subcontractor a thousand miles away.

Go to any search engine and take a look at what the national photo booth rental companies charge. Usually, it’s $1200-$1700 for a 4 hour event. A local photo booth company typically charges $900-$1400. Overall, a local photo booth company charges about 20% less than your national rental companies.

There isn’t a single thing they do better. That’s the point of this article. As soon as one person can give me a reason, I’ll post it.

Oh sure, there are always local vendors that are terrible. For example, if they are running a photo booth business from the back of their RV, don’t have an actual business address or they are working from their basement, you should really reconsider before you plunk down a thousand of your wedding budget. But even under these circumstances, if something goes wrong, you can still go over and knock on their front door to voice your anger. Try that from 1500 miles away.

In conclusion, it isn’t that national photo booth companies are running scams. The “REALITY” is they simply don’t have capabilities to be the best choice for brides in and around most major metropolitan areas.

For the thousands of smaller cities that are too small to have a local vendor, a national photo booth rental company may be the answer. But, even then, you should take a look which photo booth vendors are closest to you in another nearby city and see how much additional charge there is for traveling to your location. You could be better served.
